Our new neighbour – likey or not? Boutique Erotique.

June 15, 2010

Pictures of half-naked men and women on an Elsternwick shop window have sparked heated debate about whether they constitute art or sleaze.

The window of Boutique Erotique, featuring 36 erotic photographs, has prompted a flurry of complaints to Glen Eira Council and the shop’s owner Yuda Meitav.

The council is working with Mr Meitav to “ensure the display window fits with the shopping environment”.

Mr Meitav said he was “pretty shocked” to hear people had complained.

Having been in the adult industry for 17 years – he moved to the new Glenhuntly Rd premises from his former shop Love 2 in St Kilda – his aim is to host exhibitions of erotic art and make the sex shopping experience “more welcoming”.

Manager Guy Hamawi said some passers-by said the pictures were insulting but “most people don’t see anything offensive”.

“To us this is art,” he said.

Council spokesman Paul Burke said three complaints had been received. Its business development manager is to meet with Mr Meitav to “find a way of them running the shop in a manner the general public finds tasteful”.

But the council has no power to make him take down the images, and the Advertising Standards Bureau said the complaints fell outside its scope because the material was not classified as advertising.
