Riddell Parade – Save the Trees!

July 1, 2010

See that star in the middle of that well-loved part of our local map? Elsternwick residents are concerned about the trees that the council plans to cut down in Riddell Parade.

Glen Eira Council has plans to remove up to 50 mature trees in Riddell Parade, which are known as London plane trees. These lush (but highly allergenic) trees are in the council’s sights for removal because of damaged caused by soil and climatic conditions.

The local residents would like the trees retained as they provide good shade in summer, and they are also visually a big part of the street’s identity. The council would like to replace the plane trees with ones more suited to our climate, such as the Norway Maple.

What do you think? Should we work with our new environment or try to keep the lovely old ladies of Riddell Parade?
