Cyber Bullying A Real Teen Issue

August 24, 2010

The Caulfield Leader announces a new programme named ‘Don’t Hurt’, focussing on protecting children and teens from cyber bullying.

Statistically one out of 10 children are bullied in cyberspace, increasingly on social media websites and chatting forums. Pairing with the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, the ‘Don’t Hurt’ programme aims to give young people the practical strategies to dealing with bullying online and in the schoolyard. This campaign is also supported by Premier John Brumby who acknowledges the importance of coping strategies for parents and children.

Teens have been invited to sign onto the ‘Don’t Hurt Promise’ which stipulates:

  • I will not join in, laugh, or look on, if I know cyber-bullying is happening
  • I will not stand by and do nothing
  • I will tell a teacher, a parent, an adult or a trusted friend if I become aware of cyber bullying
  • I will not respond to any bullying message or image, and I will save the evidence.

The Leader and Alannah and Madeline Foundation are to be congratulated for this initiative.
