Council Schooled To Get Back To Basics

September 9, 2010

Following the recent controversy of the Glen Eira City Council, the State Government has had a closer look at councillors behaviour.

As we reported on our blog a little while ago, the resignation of former Councillor Helen Whiteside left a spot to be filled. In this case, the spot has been taken by Councillor Cheryl Forge. This unusual councillor exit appears representative of discord in the Glen Eira City Council.

The Caulfield Leader has reported that a 10-page report by the Local Government Investigations and Compliance revealed ‘shortcomings in the accountability and transparency of councillor behaviour’.

Some of these misbehaviours included covering or removing microphones so specific minutes were not recorded at meetings, using personal email addresses to conduct council business, changing the minutes of meetings and alleged misuse of position.

Glen Eira City Council Mayor Steve Tang has said he welcomed the report and said there was room for improvement.
